Binding (Preserving) – War Memorial Village Minutes

De-bind, Restore pages, Digital Preservation inc PDF / OCR and re-bind original content into fine Leather-bound Volumes including marbeled endpapers
The archive at the Westfield War Memorial Village Lancaster provides a unique insight into the history of care provided for disabled service personnel and their dependents.

Covering the whole 100-year lifespan of the community, it includes a myriad of documents, letters and bound reports.

Many of the items had fallen into disrepair, not least the bindings and pages of some of the older minute books and those affected by the corrosion of adhesives (primarily Sellotape) used to attach items to pages in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Finished Product

In order to further protect this invaluable resource, and to enable more people to access it, at the same time, Spink and Thackray are completing the aforementioned restoration work, capturing digital (virtual) copies of the archive converting to PDF integrating OCR for quick typed text search.

It was also suggested the historic value of the material, and the sensitive nature of some of the data contained within, means that Westfield War Memorial Archivist expect the material handed over to be dealt with as a priority in order to minimise the time that it is away from the Westfield facility.
